Edmonton event not included on 2013 schedule
SEP 21, 2012
INDYCAR, the sanctioning body for the IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights, announced it will not return to Edmonton, Alberta, in 2013.
The promoter of the 2011 and 2012 events, Octane Motorsports Events Inc., informed the City of Edmonton and INDYCAR that it has officially relinquished its right to organize a 2013 Edmonton Indy. The company has filed a “Notice of Intention to Make a Proposal” as an insolvent person at the Superior Court of Quebec.
“Despite our tight management policies and all our efforts to offer to the fans a world-class spectacle, we were not able to make this event profitable and nothing allows us to hope for a better profitability next year," a statement by Octane Motorsports Events said.
Team Penske's Helio Castroneves won the race in July on the City Centre Airport circuit. Teammate Will Power won the 2011 and '09 races, while Scott Dixon won in 2010 and '08 under INDYCAR sanction. Sebastien Bourdais (2005, '07) and Justin Wilson (2006) won under Champ Car sanction.
"When we finalized our schedule for the upcoming 2013 season, it unfortunately did not include Edmonton," INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard said. "We thank the city of Edmonton and all the fans for their support of the event over the last eight years.
"More importantly, this has not affected our plans for a minimum of 19 races next season, and we remain optimistic that we will return to having two races in Canada as early as 2014. We anticipate announcing our full 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule the first week of October."
