Scott Dixon

Scott Dixon has outdone himself. A five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion, Dixon received his sixth ESPYS nomination Wednesday in the Best Driver category.

The Chip Ganassi Racing great is joined this year by a trio of talented drivers as fellow nominees: Lewis Hamilton from Formula One, NASCAR’s Kyle Busch and NHRA drag racer Steve Torrence. Online voting to determine the 2019 Best Driver and a myriad of other categories is available here.

Winners will be announced in the live ESPYS broadcast at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, July 10 on ABC. Comedian Tracy Morgan is this year’s host.

“It’s a tremendous honor to get nominated for an ESPY,” Dixon said. “It’s something that never gets old. There is a very small group of people that get to compete at the highest level in our sport of racing, and I’m humbled to be recognized for achievements in this category. The NTT IndyCar Series is the toughest and closest form of racing around, top to bottom, and I hope we can continue the form we had in 2018 for many years to come.”

Dixon, whose 45 career wins rank third all time in Indy car history, has been an ESPY nominee in the year following each of his series championships as well as the same year he won the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. So this year’s nomination joins those from 2004, 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2016, though he is yet to win the Best Driver Award.

Indy car drivers have won the ESPY for Best Driver five times since the award was instituted in 1993. CART drivers Nigel Mansell (1994), Al Unser Jr. (1995) and Jimmy Vasser (1997) were the first to do it. NTT IndyCar Series driver Ryan Hunter-Reay won in back-to-back years in 2013 and ’14.
