Sam Schmidt drove to the only Indy car victory of his career in the 500 in 1999 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Las Vegas resident started from the pole position, but reigning Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack dominated much of the day, leading 118 of the 208 laps. Schmidt, however, made a dramatic pass for the lead with three laps to go and held on for the emotional triumph.
