Conor Daly

MADISON, Ill. -- What Conor Daly did Friday night didn't count for much and doesn't often lead to much, but it was still noteworthy and surely confidence building at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

The driver of Carlin's No. 59 Gallagher Chevrolet posted the fastest lap in the final practice for Saturday's Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta & Valvoline. Daly's lap was 181.931 mph. (Unfortunately, there are no bonus points for the Indiana driver.)

That was the good news for the team. That bad news: Charlie Kimball crashed Carlin's No. 23 ripKurrent Chevrolet at the end of what was set to be an hour-long practice session (it ended 5 minutes early due to the accident).

The contact occurred in Turn 4 of the 1.25-mile, D-shaped speedway. The car appeared to wiggle before hitting hard with the right side.

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Final Practice -- Combined Practice Speeds

Daly will start 18th in the 22-car field. He had one of the best races of his INDYCAR career here two years ago, finishing fifth for A.J. Foyt Racing.

After repairs, Kimball will line up a position behind him in 19th.

Pole winner and NTT IndyCar Series points leader Josef Newgarden posted the second-fastest lap in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet (181.312 mph). Newgarden's pole speed was 186.508 mph.

Among the championship contenders, Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing was sixth, Simon Pagenaud of Team Penske was seventh and Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport was eighth.

Saturday's NTT IndyCar Series race will see the television broadcast begin at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN with the green flag set for 8:45 p.m. Live radio broadcasts will be available on the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network and Sirius Satellite Radio (XM 209, Sirius 98, Internet/App 970).
