As another domino in Formula One’s silly season starts to wobble, racing fans across the globe are holding their breath. Fernando Alonso, one of his circuit’s most beloved drivers, is sitting on a contract with McLaren that expires at the end of this season.

He’s reportedly grown frustrated by the top-heavy nature of F1’s field that has prevented him from competing for podiums. Oh, and he’s also swooned over having another shot at the Indianapolis 500, which he ran in 2017, and he’s indicated interest in trying out the entire Verizon IndyCar Series schedule.

Alonso said last month he’d been too busy to contemplate his future, but “probably in August, when I’m at the beach tanning, it will be time to think a little bit more.”

Sure enough, on Aug. 11, he sent out a tweet teasing “14-08” with a movie reel counting down. Here it is:

Fans instantly began to speculate about what the announcement could mean – Aug. 14, the 14th day of the eighth month, is just a day from now, after all. Alonso’s Twitter mentions over the weekend became a series of hopeful and hilarious replies. Here are a few:
