Today’s question: It will be an end of an era Sunday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as a 25-season partnership between Chip Ganassi Racing and Scott Dixon will end, as Dixon is moving to Arrow McLaren in 2027. What is the indelible legacy of this legendary pairing?

Curt Cavin: Six series championships is certainly an achievement to marvel at, but for me it’s the high level of consistency Dixon and CGR have managed as a pairing. For 21 consecutive seasons and 23 of their 25 years together, they have won at least one race in this series (both figures are series records). They have finished in the top four of the point standings 19 times, another number that is unmatched. Yes, having quality teammates has helped, but consider that Dixon and his group have won 45 races with the same equipment and resources as Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan and Alex Palou, drivers who have combined for 12 series titles and seven Indianapolis 500 victories. And don’t forget the success Dixon and CGR have shared in sports car racing, highlighted by an overall win in the 2006 Rolex 24 At Daytona. It’s simply been an amazing 25-year run, one we’ll never see again.

Eric Smith: Well said by, Curt. For me, it’s the six championships. All six were won with Chip Ganassi Racing. A.J. Foyt is the only driver in series history to win more titles than Dixon, but his seven championships didn’t come with the same team. Only Dixon’s teammate Alex Palou, who now has five championships with CGR, is getting close. To me, that’s what makes Dixon’s run with Ganassi so special: the longevity, the consistency and the greatness required to remain a champion through one of the closest eras in open-wheel racing.

Dixon has won in all but two of his previous seasons with the team, a streak that could continue this weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The numbers speak for themselves - Six championships, 58 wins, 145 podiums - and they will stand the test of time. I don't think we'll ever see as long a run of consistent success again.

Paul Kelly: The NTT INDYCAR SERIES isn’t Formula One, where the first barometer of any driver’s success is how they fare against their teammate. But that comparison shines a very bright light on Dixon. In his 24 full-time seasons with Chip Ganassi Racing, only three teammates have beaten Dixon in points over a season – Dan Wheldon (once), Dario Franchitti (three times) and Alex Palou (five times). Those are some pretty lofty names in the history of the sport. That’s yet another signpost of the incredible consistency this partnership produced and that Curt, Eric and Arni illustrated well. One final note about Dixon’s legacy with CGR: The Iceman might be the only driver whose tactical masterstrokes with strategist Mike Hull (photo, above) have a label: “That’s Scott Dixon doing Scott Dixon things.” No other driver in the series has that kind of legendary branding due to his brilliance, not even Palou – yet.
