Today’s question: Christian Lundgaard became the most attractive free agent in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES after he was not announced as part of Arrow McLaren's driver lineup for 2027. For which team would you like to see Lundgaard starting next season?

Curt Cavin: Christian Lundgaard will be in the No. 9 car -- unless he isn’t. See, he’s the obvious choice, a three-time race winner (with two different teams) capable of winning any race contested on a road course or a street circuit. The knock on him is that he hasn’t shown well enough on ovals, and that might be a drawback for Chip Ganassi and Mike Hull, as well – hence my reservation. But Lundgaard’s talent suggests he will eventually figure ovals out as others have, and he surely would benefit from CGR’s immense experience. At present, Lundgaard is the best available bet to win multiple races per season and contend for the series championship, and that’s why I think he is the obvious pick – unless he isn’t.

Christian Lundgaard

Eric Smith: While Chip Ganassi Racing seems like the most logical fit, I'd love to see Christian Lundgaard return to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (photo, above). It feels like there's unfinished business after the team gave him his INDYCAR SERIES opportunity in 2021, and by every measure Lundgaard delivered. He's only become a more complete driver at Arrow McLaren, while RLL appears to have taken a step forward since his departure. A reunion could be one of the feel-good stories of the paddock and position Lundgaard as the cornerstone of RLL's future with Graham Rahal's career entering its later stages.

Arni Sribhen: I was going to state the obvious answer and say Chip Ganassi Racing. But maybe Christian Lundgaard would be better off with a reunion with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Graham Rahal might be the team leader for now, but Lundgaard has the talent and ability to drive the team to the levels it expects. Team ownership was disappointed to lose Lundgaard two seasons ago, but they also left the porch light on for the driver they brought to INDYCAR. Ganassi is the top destination, but sometimes, going home works out better.

Scott Dixon

Paul Kelly: Unless Chip Ganassi makes an Alex Zanardi-style hire out of nowhere, the answer must be Chip Ganassi Racing, right? There are two main reasons why Lundgaard to the fabled No. 9 (photo, above) makes sense. One, he’s the best free agent on the market among the current crop of NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers, with two wins and standing third in points. Two, it’s no secret there is absolutely no love lost between team owner Ganassi and McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown. So, while Brown’s extended courtship of Scott Dixon finally resulted in a switch after 24 full seasons of "The Iceman" at Ganassi, how much glee would Ganassi derive from taking Brown’s “castoff” and beating Arrow McLaren’s stout lineup next season with his roster of Alex Palou, Lundgaard and Kyffin Simpson? I can only imagine Chip’s grin – and a snide remark or two – if Lundgaard wins the 2027 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge after being cut loose by Arrow McLaren because team officials thought the Dane wasn’t performing well enough on ovals.
