2026 Preview: Dale Coyne Racing
Note: This concludes a series of 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES team previews on INDYCAR.com. The season starts Sunday, March 1 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (noon ET, FOX, FOX One, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).
Starting Lineup: Romain Grosjean (No. 18 BMax Honda), Dennis Hauger (No. 19 Ault Block Chain Honda).
2025 in Review: Dale Coyne’s two-car team featured Rinus VeeKay and rookie Jacob Abel. VeeKay had a strong season, running as high as 10th in the standings before finishing 14th. He opened the season by finishing ninth in St. Petersburg and was fourth in the fourth race, at Barber Motorsports Park. He added another ninth-place finish in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course race, which propelled him to 10th in the standings heading to the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. After contact knocked VeeKay out of the “500,” he had a string of three top-10 finishes (seventh at World Wide Technology Raceway, 10th at Road America and ninth at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. His season highlight came in Toronto where he finished second at Exhibition Place. For the season, VeeKay led 19 laps and had seven top-10 finishes. Abel’s season was challenging. His best finish was 11th in the second race of the Iowa Speedway doubleheader. The low point came when he failed to earn a starting position for the “500.” Driving for Andretti Global, Hauger won six of the 14 INDY NXT by Firestone races to win the season championship by 72 points over Caio Collet (three wins). Grosjean competed in five IMSA sports car races with Lamborghini, finishing a season-best fourth at Road Atlanta.
New for ’26: Grosjean and Hauger are new to the team for this season, although Grosjean is back for a second stint. He finished 15th in the standings with a pole on the IMS road course as a series newcomer in 2021. Hauger brings promise as last year’s INDY NXT by Firestone champion. The team recently hired Bill Pappas as an engineer, and he will work with Grosjean. Michael Cannon, who joined the team at midseason last year, will be on Hauger’s car.
Keep an Eye on This: While Hauger will be new to this series and Grosjean didn’t drive here last year, the team has considerable engineering experience. The combination of Pappas, Cannon, Mitch Davis and Mike Colliver is formidable, particularly beneficial at Indy.
Little-Known Fact: Don’t be surprised if Hauger (photo, below) is quick to impress in qualifying sessions. He started on the front row for each of last year’s first 11 races – and 12 in all – in INDY NXT by Firestone. He never started a race lower than third.
