Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Feb. 27 in New York’s Financial District, another one of the spoils of his victory last May in the 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.

Newgarden earned his first Indy 500 win and Team Penske’s record-extending 19th victory in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” with a dramatic last-lap pass of Marcus Ericsson on May 26, 2023.

“It’s a pretty tremendous honor to be here at the New York Stock Exchange with BorgWarner, representing the Penske Corporation and Team Penske,” Newgarden said. “For me, it’s a significant achievement and honor. I follow the exchanges and believe in the opportunity they provide to every American.

“To put INDYCAR and the Indy 500 on the world stage this morning was a real treat. To celebrate last year and look forward to the 2024 season is something we’re all excited about.”

Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden was a guest of BorgWarner, the sponsor of the famous Borg-Warner Trophy presented annually to the Indianapolis 500 winner. The iconic trophy was on display at the NYSE during the ceremony, and Indianapolis 500 logos appeared on the video boards at the exchange. Newgarden’s Indy-winning No. 2 Shell Powering Progress Team Penske Chevrolet race car also was on display outside the NYSE.

Joining Newgarden on the podium at the NYSE were his wife, Ashley; BorgWarner President and CEO Frederic Lissalde; Roger Penske; Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles and other dignitaries.

This is the second time Newgarden has opened a major stock exchange in the last nine months. He also rang the opening bell at the NASDAQ late last May as part of his victory tour in New York.

Newgarden and the rest of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES field will start their 2024 season Sunday, March 10 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding. Newgarden will try to become the first back-to-back winner of the “500” since 2002 at this year’s race, scheduled for Sunday, May 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
