May 29, 2016, is the race date. Here are key Verizon IndyCar Series dates that precede the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing":

* Feb. 26-27 -- Promoter test at Phoenix International Raceway; first all teams on-track event. It is five weeks in advance of the Phoenix Grand Prix, which will mark the first Indy car event in 11 years at PIR.

* March 11-13 -- Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the Verizon IndyCar Series season opener.

* April 2 -- Phoenix Grand Prix.

* April 6 -- Aero kit safety test on Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

* April 17 -- Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

* April 24 -- Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.

* May 12 -- Promoter test on Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

* May 13-14 -- Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis on Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

* May 16 -- Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation Program and refresher test program and practice.

* May 17-20 -- Indianapolis 500 practice.

* May 21-22 -- Indianapolis 500 qualifications.

* May 23 -- Indianapolis 500 practice.

* May 27 -- Coors Light Carb Day, including final Indy 500 practice, Freedom 100 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race, Pit Stop Competition, concert.

* May 28 -- Legends Day, featuring autograph sessions with Indy 500 competitors and past drivers.
