Mario Andretti

First in a series looking at historical Indy car statistical categories

Mario Andretti heads the list of all-time Indy car drivers with 67 career pole starts.

Andretti's first came on June 20, 1965, on the one-mile Langhorne Speedway (Pa.) oval (he led 33 of 100 laps and finished second to Jim McElreath). His last came on Aug. 1, 1993, on the 2-mile Michigan International Speedway oval. Overall, he recorded 40 poles on ovals and 27 on road/street courses.

Andretti converted 24 of those pole starts into victories (tops on the all-time list). His most famous Indy car win -- the 1969 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race -- was from the second starting position. He won the USAC championship that season, accumulating five poles (tying Dan Gurney for the field high) and a field-high nine victories in the 24 races.

Andretti is second to Bobby Unser (eight) in consecutive pole positions (seven during the 1965-66 USAC seasons) and is tied with Danny Sullivan for most in a season with nine (1966 USAC season). A.J. Foyt had 10 pole starts in the 1965 USAC season. He is second on the all-time list with 53 poles, and 23 of his chart-topping 67 race wins came from the pole.

Bobby Unser had 49 pole starts. Helio Castroneves, who earned the Verizon P1 Award for the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season finale at Auto Club Speedway and is the active leader, is fourth on the list with 41. Rick Mears completes the top five with 40.
