Alex Palou led practice for the GMR Grand Prix this morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, toppling fellow young star Callum Ilott from the peak of the speed chart in the final minute of the session.

Series points leader Palou’s quickest lap was 1 minute, 10.4555 seconds in the No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda came after the track re-opened for a 90-second scramble after a red flag for the stalled No. 06 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda of Helio Castroneves at pit entry on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

Impressive rookie Ilott ended up second at 1:10.4593 in the No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet. Three-time GMR Grand Prix winner Will Power was third at 1:10.5277 in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.

Graham Rahal was fourth at 1:10.6125 in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda, while Felix Rosenqvist rounded out the top five at 1:10.7108 in the No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet.

Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon started his session with a bit of anxiety when smoke billowed from his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in the pits. But the Ganassi crew discovered the smoke was created only by a resin or coating burning in the engine’s exhaust pipes, and Dixon continued the session without incident.

The next practice is set for 12:45 p.m. (ET), with live coverage on Peacock Premium. NTT P1 Award qualifying starts at 4 p.m., also live on Peacock.
