Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series Will Power champion turned the quickest lap of the 60-minute practice leading into the revised Old National Armed Forces Pole Day qualifications format at 227.377 mph in the No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.
Power, who won the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis from the pole May 9, is seeking to sweep the Month of May with the Verizon P1 Award and his first victory in the Indianapolis 500.
Five Chevrolets and five Hondas filled the top 10 on the lap speed chart.
Lap speeds were slower than the past few day after INDYCAR announced measures as safety precautions:
-- The boost level, which was increased from 130 kPa to 140 kPa for “Fast Friday” practice May 15 and scheduled qualifications May 16, was returned to 130 kPa for Pole Day qualifications. That relates to about a 40 horsepower reduction to the Chevrolet and Honda 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engines. The boost level will remain at 130 kPa for final practice on Coors Light Carb Day on May 22 and the 500 Mile Race on May 24.
-- The aerodynamic bodywork package that Chevrolet- and Honda-aligned entries qualifying with must be utilized in the 200-lap race. Downforce will be increased on the superspeedway platforms for added stability.
Ed Carpenter's early morning crash, in addition to incidents last week involving Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves, in which their cars became airborne, and Pippa Mann prompted the changes.
Carpenter returned to the racetrack just over five hours after the No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka CFH Racing Chevrolet, spun, made hard rearward contact with the Turn 2 SAFER Barrier, rotated upside down and slid down the backstretch on its left side. The team co-owner/driver exited the race car without assistance from the Holmatro Safety Team, was examined at the IU Health Emergency Medical Center and cleared to drive.
Carpenter's crew built around a backup chassis, and he turned seven laps with a best of 223.631 mph.
Jack Hawksworth, driving the No. 41 ABC Supply Co. AJ Foyt Racing Honda, was second on the speed chart at 227.316 mph, and Simon Pagenaud was third (2276.863 mph) in the No. 22 Avaya Team Penske Chevrolet.
"(Cars) are down a few miles per hour, but they still look quick," said Newgarden, driver of the No. 21 Century 21 CFH Racing Chevrolet who had a best lap of 224.455 mph. "You notice it a little without the boost, but otherwise the car feels the same."
A few minutes before Carpenter's incident, Scott Dixon turned a lap of 233.001 mph in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet. On May 16, Castroneves turned a lap of 233.474 mph -- the fastest since Eddie Cheever Jr.'s 236.103 mph lap in the 1996 Indianapolis 500.
The revised schedule (all times Eastern):
3:15 p.m. -- Qualifications begin; all cars get one four-lap qualifying attempt for positions 1-30
-- Qualifying for positions 31-33 will begin about 30 minutes following the previous session; multiple attempts as time permits
