Alexander Rossi

As the march toward 2020 reaches its end, INDYCAR is offering a series of reflections to the recently completed NTT IndyCar Series season. This shot taken by staff photographer Chris Owens is part of Through the Lens.

Andretti Autosport driver Alexander Rossi, whose blue and yellow No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda is the most in focus in this photograph, didn't win the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, but everyone knew he was there. After qualifying ninth, the 2016 500 winner stormed to the front, taking the lead for the first time on Lap 68.

The Californian led 22 laps -- second only to Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud, who led 116 of the 200 laps -- and was the one sparring with Pagenaud in the closing laps. Rossi led as late as the 198th lap. Their separation at the finish line was 0.2086 seconds.

The 104th running of the iconic event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be May 24, 2020.
