Stefan Wilson

Stefan Wilson had many of his biggest supporters on hand Monday when his ride for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil was unveiled in front of the Gate 1 main entrance to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Wilson is driving the No. 25 #Driven2SaveLives Honda for Andretti Autosport in attempting to qualify for his second Indy 500. The Driven2SaveLives campaign, created in 2016 by the Indiana Donor Network, is geared to increase awareness and encourage people to register to become organ and tissue donors. Wilson has been involved in the program since its inception as a way to honor the legacy of his late brother Justin, who died from injuries sustained in a 2015 racing incident but was able to save the lives of five people because he had agreed to become an organ donor.

Driven 2 Save Lives Front WingWilson’s car features the names of 25 people among the 115,000 on the national wait list for organ transplants. Many of the 25 attended the unveiling on Monday.

“It’s easy to say we’re going to start putting names on the car, but when you start meeting those people, that’s when it really brings it to life,” Wilson said. “It’s been quite cool to meet those people today, and a couple of them have already received their transplants. That’s even cooler.”

The urgency for those in need of a transplant was also driven home on Monday. All the names but one are listed on the front wing of Wilson's Indy car. The 25th name, Samantha Rose Fross, will ride in the cockpit with Wilson. Fross died before she was able to receive a transplant.

Adding the names of people on the waiting list was, in Wilson’s mind, the next step in the evolution of the #Driven2SaveLives program and for him as a driver.

“It’s important for me to start sort of creating my own name and sort of becoming my own man almost,” he said. “It’s important to evolve from where we were in 2016, where it was just a campaign honoring Justin and raising awareness utilizing Justin’s story. This year, it was important for me to grow and develop that story on from that. To me, that was important to put an emphasis on the people that we’re actually driven to save.

“It’s a really special campaign and a really special place to be sending out that message, at the greatest racetrack in the world.”

Wilson made his Indy 500 debut two years ago, but stepped away from an Andretti Autosport ride last year to allow two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso to compete. Wilson is itching to get behind the wheel when the 2.5-mile oval opens for practice on Tuesday.

“A lot of anticipation, man,” he admitted with a hint of impatience in his voice. “There’s been a lot of time to think about it. I just want to get out there now and figure it out for myself. Obviously, two years have gone by, it’s a different aero kit now. I just want to get in the car and get going.”
