Attendees this week at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Indianapolis have the exclusive opportunity to view a screening of the acclaimed documentary “Yellow, Yellow, Yellow: The INDYCAR Safety Team” on Thursday to be followed by a panel discussion with a trio of INDYCAR’s leading safety specialists.
Drs. Terry Trammell and Stephen Olvey, pioneers in motorsports safety, along with Jeff Horton, INDYCAR’s director of engineering/safety, will talk about trends in motorsports safety, technology, science and more during the panel moderated by John Waraniak, the SEMA vice president of vehicle technology.
“Yellow, Yellow, Yellow” is a 45-minute special that aired earlier this year on NBCSN examining the unparalleled work of INDYCAR’s Holmatro Safety Team. The group of doctors, nurses, paramedics and firefighter/EMTs is on site at every Verizon IndyCar Series event attending to the medical needs of drivers and team and series personnel.
The documentary follows the high-pressure work of the safety team and includes interviews with Trammell and Horton, veteran drivers James Hinchcliffe and Tony Kanaan, as well as Mike Yates, the recently retired INDYCAR manager of track safety operations. Hinchcliffe’s 2015 crash in Indianapolis 500 practice, when he survived life-threatening injuries due in part to the quick actions of the Holmatro Safety Team, is a focal point of the special.
The documentary is a product of Mile A Way Productions, which specializes in motorsports documentary, non-fiction and feature programming. The company is currently in production of “Rapid Response,” an adaptation of Olvey’s book, “Rapid Response: My inside story as a motor racing life-saver,” which traces the roots of motorsports safety from Olvey’s experiences as one of the founders of the safety team in Indy car racing.
“Race fans are already familiar with the amazing work the safety team does for INDYCAR, but ‘Yellow, Yellow, Yellow’ gave us a chance to get up close and meet the people who are at every race with the single purpose of trying to keep drivers safe,” said Michael Williams Miles, executive producer. “We just so happened to be in production on our feature documentary, ‘Rapid Response,’ when James Hinchcliffe’s incident occurred and were lucky to be able to interview so many current personnel involved in the rescue success story.
“Hopefully, this special will give race fans a better understanding of what the safety team does and how they do it.”
The screening of “Yellow, Yellow, Yellow” begins at 11:30 a.m. ET Thursday in Room 242 of the Indiana Convention Center, with the panel discussion to follow. Admission is free to PRI attendees. For those unable to attend, the documentary is available to view on Amazon.com.
