SONOMA, Calif. -- Scott Dixon's victory in the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway delivered Chip Ganassi Racing Teams' 100th Indy car win.
Dixon, who earned his fourth Indy car championship with the win, also produced the team's 99th win on June 6 in the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Dixon is one of 12 drivers to have won an Indy car race for the Indianapolis-based team, and he’s the team leader with 38 (his first win was in 2001 at Nazareth Speedway with PacWest Racing). Dixon moved closer to Al Unser (39) for fourth on the all-time Indy car victory list.
"We win them as a team, and just I feel very blessed to obviously do what I do. I love IndyCar racing," said Dixon, 35, who completed his 14th year with the team. "I think the Verizon IndyCar Series is one of the best series in the world. We put on amazing races, and the talent that we have here, the depth, is fantastic. I feel blessed and love waking up to myself being an IndyCar racer as a champion and hope for many more years."
Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, founded in 1990, has 11 series championships and four Indianapolis 500 victories. Michael Andretti recorded the first victory on March 20, 1994, in the Australian FAI IndyCar Grand Prix.
The names of the Ganassi IndyCar drivers over the years are some of the sport's greats: Andretti, Arie Luyendyk, Alex Zanardi, Jimmy Vasser, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dixon, Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon, Kenny Brack and Tony Kanaan. Bruno Junqueira, Charlie Kimball and Jeff Ward also have won races for Ganassi.
Ganassi, 57, began competing in Indy car racing in 1982. He made five starts in the Indianapolis 500, with a best finish of eighth in 1983. He also drove sports cars in competition. He purchased an interest in Patrick Racing, which whom he had raced, in 1988, and in 1990 started his own Indy car team.
