TORONTO -- Honda Indy Toronto winner Josef Newgarden was among the quickest drivers in practice June 13 on the 1.755-mile, 11-turn Exhibition Place street circuit but was unsatisfied with qualifying 11th in the No. 67 Hartman Oil CFH Racing Chevrolet.

He displayed quickness and poise over the final 14 laps of the 85-lap race and edged teammate Luca Filippi at the finish line by 1.4485 seconds to win his second race of the season. The 10 positions gained relative to his starting spot was a field high.

"Once we got into the position to win the race you could see that we had cars to do it, and that was the biggest factor for me," he said. "We weren't in position at the  start of the race to try and really capitalize and win one, but we got there with a little bit of luck, and we still did the work we had to do to win the race.

"We had good pit stops, good strategy to get that done, and it all came together, so a little bit of luck but definitely a good performance, too."

Conor Daly, competing in Toronto for the first time in the No. 5 Arrow/Lucas Oil Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda, and fellow Verizon IndyCar Series rookie Gabby Chaves advanced seven positions. Daly finished 12th and Chaves placed 15th in the No. 98 Bowers & Wilkins/Curb Honda for Bryan Herta Autosport.

"At the beginning, it was really interesting in the wet but the No. 5 Arrow Electronics car was really good as usual and we started making up positions," said Daly, who was making his fifth start of the season. "I just made a mistake going into Turn 8 and had to spin it around. I just didn't want to take the chance so that was a bit of a shame. We still ended up coming back and the car was really good on dry tires.

"I wish we'd had that set-up in qualifying. It felt really good and I'm really happy with the progress we made. We didn't get a top 10 but I think we had a good pace and we definitely made a lot of progress with the car, which is a great thing overall."

Chaves has finished better than his qualifying spot in all 10 races.
