Less than 96 hours after undergoing surgery for a pelvis and upper left thigh injury, Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe was up and moving at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indiana.
The Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver suffered the injury in practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that will keep him out of the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24. His spirit is unbroken, though. Read the background story
"I'll be knocking out 5ks in no time," he said on Instrgram. "Long recovery ahead but lucky to be surrounded by the best friends, family, colleagues, medical staff and safety workers on earth."
Honda Performance Development president Art St. Cyr visited Hinchcliffe twice in the hospital.
"When they transferred him to his regular room, he’s doing amazing. He’s joking, cracking jokes, which is pretty amazing considering the seriousness of the situation,” St. Cyr said. “We’re looking forward to getting him back. That’s all he can talk about is he can’t wait to get back in the car. So sometimes you wonder what these race car drivers are thinking, right?”
