Detroit has had its share of unflattering news reports the past few years, but tourism officials and politicos can crow a little today as a USA Today online poll listed the Motor City as the top city for sports in the nation.

Results were in the Oct. 3 print and online editions of the newspaper, and the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix was highlighted. As the report points out:

The Motor City lives up to its name with its annual IndyCar race at Belle Isle: a two-day event every year, in the early summer. On top of that, fans have all the classics with the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons all hosting top-notch action throughout the year.

In fact, the Verizon IndyCar Series races in multiple markets on the list, including Indianapolis (the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis 500), Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas (Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway) and New Orleans (Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana). You could stretch it with Oakland (the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma) in nearby Sonoma, Calif.

The inaugural Verizon IndyCar Series race at NOLA Motorsports Park near New Orleans is set for April 12, 2015. The second race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course is scheduled for May 9, with the 99th Indianapolis 500 on May 24. The annual night race at Texas Motor Speedway is set for June 6. The race weekend for Belle Isle is May 29-31. The date for the 11th Verizon IndyCar Series race at Sonoma Raceway has not been announced.
