SONOMA, Calif. -- Verizon IndyCar Series championship team owner Chip Ganassi and driver Scott Dixon celebrated the title-clinching victory in the GoPro Grand Prix of Somoma in an impromptu and highly unusual (for them) way at Sonoma Raceway.
"I was behind the stage doing interviews and somebody said, 'Hey, Chip is crowd surfing.' I thought, 'Wow, I have to see that. Did he hurt anybody?' " Dixon said. "And then he came back and said I have to crowd surf, too. I said, 'No, I'm good, man.' ''
But Ganassi persisted so Dixon asked about orientation -- face down or face up -- and away he went.
“Those were all the Team Target people out there and they were just screaming,” Ganassi said. “There were just so many of them down there. I went over and I just kind of gave them the two‑hand (high-five) in jubilation, and then they all came over and they started saying, ‘Jump, jump’ or whatever. ‘Oh, my, I lined myself up’ for that. I couldn't say no then.
“I've never done that before, body surfed like that. That was really something. What a better place and a better way to do that for the first time.”
