“Pivotal. A great day. Dominating, for sure.” Will Power’s enthusiasm regarding his victory at The Milwaukee Mile hasn't waned since Aug. 17, 2014.

Repeating this weekend in the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers would be a boon to the Team Penske driver’s Verizon IndyCar Series championship aspirations for the second consecutive season.

Power visits The Milwaukee Mile, which will host its 113th Indy car race, 46 points behind front-running teammate Juan Pablo Montoya. Last year, Power entered the race with a four-point advantage over teammate Helio Castroneves and, earning the max bonus points taxed onto the win, traveled to the penultimate race of the season with a 39-point margin. He went on to earn his first series title.

"We need a race to really jump-start the rest of our season and Milwaukee did that for us last year," Power said. "The win there kind of cemented our spot as the championship front-runner, even though we still had to take care of business the rest of the year."

After claiming the pole position, he led 229 of the 250 laps and led Montoya across the finish line by 2.7949 seconds for his first victory on a short oval. Tony Kanaan finished third.

“I didn’t expect to get pole and then the car felt awesome in the race; we hardly made any adjustments,” Power reflected, “and just did a good all-around job. We had a test day (in early June) that was good preparation. They key to winning it is being good in lapped traffic.”

Three other drivers entered in the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest also won Indy car races at The Milwaukee Mile from the pole: Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000, Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2004 and Sebastien Bourdais in 2006. Also, Sage Karam won the 2013 Indy Lights race from the pole on the way to wrapping up the series championship.

2000  (second command performance)

A week after a dominating drive in winning the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race for the first time, Montoya also took command at Milwaukee in the Chip Ganassi Racing Lola Toyota.

Montoya led 167 of the 200 laps on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval and led 179 of the 225 laps at The Milwaukee Mile. Michael Andretti finished 1.015 seconds back in second. It was the first Indy car victory for Toyota. Box score

Montoya, who won the 99th Indianapolis 500 in May, will make his fourth start at Milwaukee. In nine races on ovals since returning to Indy car racing in 2014, Montoya has two victories among eight top-five finishes (including Milwaukee last August).

2004 (not since 1992 ...)

Hunter-Reay became the first driver to start from the pole and lead every lap (250) on an oval racetrack since Bobby Rahal won a 200-lapper in 1992 at Phoenix International Raceway. Hunter-Reay lapped everyone in the 18-car field except runner-up Patrick Carpentier and 2003 Milwaukee winner Michel Jourdain Jr.

Current INDYCAR vice president of technology Will Phillips was Hunter-Reay’s race engineer on the Herdez Competition Lola Ford-Cosworth, vice president of operations Vince Kremer was the race strategist and engine support engineer Daniel Louks was the fuel strategist. Box score

Hunter-Reay also won at Milwaukee in 2012 and 2013 in an Andretti Autosport car.

"We’ve had success at this track in the past and it would be a huge achievement to join the list of four-time winners at the famed one-mile oval,"  said Hunter-Reay, who will make his 10th Indy car start at the track.

2006 (four in row to start season)

Bourdais gave his Newman/Haas Racing team its first Milwaukee pole since 1985 and went on to his fourth consecutive victory to start the season that turned into the third of his four consecutive championships.

He finished 3.612 seconds ahead of Justin Wilson. Box score

The race this weekend will be Bourdais’ seventh Indy car start at Milwaukee and 143rd overall. He’s seventh in the championship standings, 40 points out of fifth.

“There aren’t a lot of races left, so if we are going to have a chance to finish in the top five in the championship the Hydroxycut-KVSH Racing team will have to have a good result in Milwaukee,” he said.
