Championship standings

Four races remain the Verizon IndyCar Series season and a battle to the finish for the driver championship is lining up for the 10th consecutive year.

Team Penske's Juan Pablo Montoya has topped the standings since the St. Petersburg opener with the consistency necessary on the most diverse set of racetracks in motorsports. But, as he notes, there is a lot of racing left, and the Aug. 30 GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma finale carries double points. Behind the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner are four drivers tightly bunched by points, and more than a dozen are mathematically eligible.

Of the top five in the standings, three-time series champion Scott Dixon fared the best last season in the upcoming four races (at the .894-mile, variably banked Iowa Speedway; the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course; the 2.5-mile Ponoco Raceway and the 2.385-mile, 12-turn Sonoma Raceway). He won at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma and placed in the top five at the other two venues.
