Qualifications: Helio Castroneves broke the nine-year-old track record and earned the Verizon P1 Award with a lap of 1:06.6294 in the No. 3 Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet for Team Penske. It was his 42nd career pole -- fourth on the all-time list. Teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, who won the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., from the fourth starting spot, qualified on the outside of the front row.

Points: Driver, entrant and engine manufacturer receive points corresponding to their finish in the race (manufacturer points are awarded to the top three race finishers). Bonus points for driver/entrant also are awarded for Verizon P1 Award (1 point), leading the most laps (2 points) and leading a lap (1 point). Engine manufacturer bonus points are awarded for Verizon P1 Award (1 point) and leading the most laps (2 points).

Of note: Team Penske drivers have won five of the past seven poles at Long Beach, including Will Power 2009-2011.  … Four drivers have won the race from the pole – Michael Andretti (1984, 1985 and 1987), Al Unser Jr. (1989-90), Helio Castroneves (2001) and Sebastien Bourdais (2006-07). Andretti’s last Indy car victory came at Long Beach in 2002. … Nineteen drivers entered have competed in an Indy car race at Long Beach.
