Roger Penske wasn't joking during his speech at the NASCAR banquet Nov. 30.

The winning car owner of the Sprint Cup trophy offered Tony Stewart a ride in the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2013. Everyone in the audience at the event in Las Vegas laughed it off, but Penske afterward said he was serious. Stewart has yet to comment.

ABC/ESPN, in a statement, is behind the idea: "ABC/ESPN would enthusiastically support the opportunity for said driver(s) to participate in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. We have strong partnerships with the league and speedway."

In an effort to give fans of Tony Stewart, the Indianapolis 500, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the IZOD IndyCar Series a chance to voice support encouraging Stewart to accept the offer, IMS has started an on-line petition.
