Biography of Marco Andretti

Marco Andretti made a successful leap to the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2006 after three seasons competing in various junior formula series and Firestone Indy Lights.

But Andretti's rapid rise shouldn't come as a surprise given his lineage. He is the son of IZOD IndyCar Series team owner and Indianapolis 500 veteran Michael Andretti and the grandson of auto racing legend Mario Andretti.

Andretti won for the first time in his rookie season -- a few months after finishing runner-up in the second-closest Indianapolis 500 -- at 19 years, 5 months, 14 days. 

Andretti is an avid sports participant and traveler.

2006
• Won Bombardier Rookie of the Year Award after finishing seventh in IndyCar Series standings for Andretti Green Racing.
• Became youngest winner of a major open-wheel event (19 years, 5 months, 14 days) when he won at Infineon Raceway.
• Recorded four top-five and seven top-10 finishes.
• Started ninth and finished second in 90th Indianapolis 500 and earned Chase Rookie of the Year honors.

ROAD TO IZOD INDYCAR SERIES

2005
• Finished 10th in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series despite competing in just six of 14 events.
• Recorded three victories and three pole positions, including his series debut on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., the first non-oval event in series history. Also recorded wins and poles at Indianapolis (road course) and Infineon.
• Led 102 laps in four races.
• Finished 16th in his first career oval race, the Futaba Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
• Finished fifth in Star Mazda Championship, recording three top-five finishes.

2004
• Won the Skip Barber National series.
• Won the Formula TR 1600 Pro Series championship with seven victories.
• Won the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Southern Series championship with 11 victories.

2003
• Won Skip Barber Formula Dodge Eastern Series championship in his first season racing cars. Earned eight victories en route to Rookie of the Year honors.

Early Career
• Began karting at age 10. Competed in World Karting Association and Stars of Tomorrow karting events in 2002.

Andretti Autosport

Based in Indianapolis and led by racing legend Michael Andretti, Andretti Autosport fields multiple entries in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Andretti Autosport also campaigns multiple cars in Firestone Indy Lights, the Star Mazda Championship and in the USF2000 National Championship.

The company boasts three IZOD IndyCar Series championships (2004, 2005 and 2007), two Firestone Indy Lights titles (2008 and 2009), one USF2000 championship (2010) and has won the Indianapolis 500 twice (2005 and 2007).

Andretti competed for 19 years in the CART championship before moving to the IndyCar Series in 2003. He retired from full-time driving following the 2003 Indianapolis 500 to concentrate on team ownership.
