Team Pelfrey, the 2011 rebirth of memorable IndyCar operation Team Pelfrey, ventures back into professional open-wheel racing with an important goal in mind: help and develop new talent. The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear as part of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system proves to be a perfect medium for owner Dale Pelfrey to showcase his latest foray into the world of professional motorsports and the business model is to not cut any corners in doing so.
Pelfrey’s formula for molding a team is no different to that of the company he founded and led for over 30 years, Enginetics Aerospace who specialized in the design and manufacturing of jet engine components for the international market—hire the best, acquire the best, and demand the best in order to achieve the most. Team Pelfrey is no different and has already proven it thus far with the decisions that Pelfrey has made in setting up his new venture.
Pelfrey’s last stint as a team owner was in the IZOD IndyCar Series from 1998-2000 which had such drivers as Danny Ongais, Memo Gidley, Bryan Tyler, Billy Boat, Robby Unser and John Paul Jr., who led 39 laps of the 1998 Indianapolis 500. Pelfrey also gave current IndyCar Series owner and successful female driver Sarah Fisher her first ride in an IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway in 1999.
In addition to his business ventures and IndyCar past, Pelfrey himself has also raced competitively. From flat-track motorcycles in his teens, to karts, Skip Barber, and a P2 car in the Grand-Am Rolex Series, Pelfrey has always had a passion for the competitiveness that motorsports provides. This above all else is what’s pushing Team Pelfrey’s re-entry into professional open-wheel racing, with its sights set firmly on immediately challenging for top honors.
