Of course the IndyCar Series race on Belle Isle is close to Helio Castroneves' heart. The street circuit on the picturesque park is where he won for the first time.
That was back in June 2000, and the Team Penske driver is already looking forward to the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. The inaugural IndyCar Series doubleheader race weekend returns May 30-June 1, 2014.
Multiple ticket packages are available to the public beginning Nov. 20. Click HERE to check it out.
"The first doubleheader format I enjoyed it very much and people should see the island. It's an amazing jewel for Detroit and the organizing group led by Roger (Penske) has been polishing it."
Castroneves and IndyCar Series team owner/driver Ed Carpenter will help kick off the ticket drive at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20 in the GM Renaissance Center Wintergarden. The event is open to the public.
Mike Conway and Simon Pagenaud won the races, which immediately followed the 97th Indianapolis 500, this past season. It was announced Nov. 15 that Conway would drive the road/street course races on the 2014 schedule in the No. 20 Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka car for Ed Carpenter Racing.
According to information in a report conducted by sports consulting firm Sportsimpacts and released Nov. 18, the 2013 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix generated $46.3 million in total spending for the Metropolitan Detroit region.
Of the 2013 total spending number affecting Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, $17 million represents new spending to the region as a result of non-local sources that will be retained long term as new income for Detroit-area households, businesses and government. This represents a total economic impact increase of $1.3 million over the 2012 Grand Prix, according to Sportsimpacts.
