Indy 500 Bump Day primer: Completing the field of 33
MAY 18, 2013
Katherine Legge jumping in the No. 81 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports car will guarantee at least one bump to determine the 33-car starting field for the 97th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.
The drama will unfold on Old National Armed Forces Bump Day May 19 as positions 25-33 will be determined based on four-lap qualifying averages on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

In addition to Legge, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammates Graham Rahal and Michel Jourdain Jr., rookies Tristan Vautier and Conor Daly, Ana Beatriz, Buddy Lazier, Pippa Mann, Josef Newgarden and Sebastian Saavedra will attempt to qualify.
"I’m really disappointed for Graham," said team co-owner Bobby Rahal, the 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner. "Every time we went out the car just went slower. The car handles well but we are just lacking. We’re going to be in the race but you would like to have been able to focus totally on the race setup. But we will still be able to do a lot of that. I have no doubt that (May 19) will be quite fast. It almost doesn’t matter where you start this race from.
"I think Michel just had way too much push in the car. We have got to get him more comfortable in the car for sure.”
Ed Carpenter earned the Verizon P1 Award in the nine-driver shootout with a four-lap average of 228.762 mph.
NBC Sports Network will broadcast the time trials from noon-6:30 p.m. (ET). It also will broadcast final Indianapolis 500 practice, the Firestone Freedom 100 and the Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge on May 24. Bob Jenkins will be the host.

Bump Day qualifying format
Positions 25-33 will be determined based on the day's fastest four-lap averages. Once the field is filled, any qualifying attempt that is faster than a qualified entrant in the field will bump the slowest qualifier regardless of the day of qualification. The "bumping" entrant is placed at the rear of the field, while the "bumped" entrant is removed from the field, but has the opportunity to bumps its way back into the field as time allows. Each entrant is allowed three qualifying attempts.
Engines and turbo boost: Consumer-relevant 2.2-liter turbo-charged V-6 from Chevrolet (twin-turbo) and Honda (single turbo) fueled by E85. The boost level will be upped from 130 kPa to 140 kPa through qualifications for about a 40 horsepower boost
