Notes: Wilson signs multi-year contract
MAR 22, 2013
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Justin Wilson returns to Dale Coyne Racing for a second consecutive season, driving the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America/Sonny's Bar-B-Q car. He'll be with the team for future season openers, too.
"In evaluating Dale's commitment to the sport, we have signed a long-term agreement," Wilson said. "We had a great season last year highlighted by our first win at an oval track in Texas. The entire team’s back, so I am expecting good things to happen."
The deal is for three years plus options.
Wilson has seven victories -- two with Dale Coyne Racing -- in 131 Indy car starts since 2004. In addition to the victory in the Firestone 550 last June, Wilson recorded five other top-10 finishes and had a season-high qualifying effort of second at Milwaukee the week after Texas.
Ana Beatriz will drive the No. 18 Ipiranga car at St. Petersburg, Brazil, Indianapolis and other select races. Beatriz, with 22 IZOD IndyCar Series starts, last competed in the 2012 Indianapolis 500 with Andretti Autosport. She tested last week at Barber Motorsports Park.
"This is a great opportunity with Dale Coyne Racing and hopefully we can turn it into more than a few races for the season," said Beatriz, who hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil. "We are working on more races for 2013 and hopefully we should know something very soon."
Hinchcliffe and Taylor Swift? Don't read anything into it
James Hinchcliffe was talking about being with the same IZOD IndyCar Series team for the second consecutive season, which is the consistency he believes will aid on the track this season.
"I think in any team sport consistency is huge,” he said. “Ryan (Hunter-Reay) talked about how (consistency) helped him last year and I'm looking forward to doing the same this year.
“I kind of felt like the Taylor Swift of racing. I was bouncing around and I figured it must be me."
The Toronto native quickly extricated himself from a potential yellow flag: “I’m saying Taylor Swift knows what she wants in a partner before she settles down.”
Tracy, the 2003 race winner at St. Pete, on hand for Sportsnet broadcast
Paul Tracy, who won the St. Petersburg race in February 2003 and went on the win the CART championship, will be the analyst for Sportsnet’s inaugural IZOD IndyCar Series broadcast March 24.
Tracy, who is tied with Sebastien Bourdais and Dario Franchitti for seventh on the career victory list with 31, will join the broadcast team that features Canadian Motorsport Hall of Famer Bill Adam, pit reporter Todd Lewis and host Rob Faulds. Tracy also will be on the air for the Indianapolis 500, the Honda Indy Toronto and select other races.
