Heat Index looks at the driver(s) making the biggest moves in the previous race.

Will Power took a step backward in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings, but took a step toward front-runner Ryan Hunter-Reay, too.

Power drove the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske from the 17th starting position in the Edmonton Indy to a third-place finish. He qualified seventh on the 2.224-mile, 13turn City Centre Airport circuit, but the entry was assessed a 10-grid spot penalty for an unapproved change of the Chevrolet engine (swapped before meeting the 1,850-mile limit).

The positions gained were the most of any in the 25-car field. Mike Conway, driving the No. 14 ABC Supply car for A.J. Foyt Racing picked up 12 spots to finish 11th.

Power, a two-time winner in Edmonton, was overtaken for second place in the championship chase with four races left by teammate Helio Castroneves, who won the caution-free 75-lap race. With Hunter-Reay finishing seventh, both made up ground on the Andretti Autosport driver who entered the race with a 35-point cushion. Castroneves is 23 points back; Power is 26 points off the pace heading to the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on Aug. 5.

"It was definitely an enjoyable drive and it's great to have a good day with the Verizon car," said Power, who leads the Mario Andretti Road Course Trophy standings. "It's shaping up to be a pretty tight championship. I think if we started 17th and there was going to be no yellow (flags), and we thought we'd end up third, we'd take that for sure. Man, good day."

Power, who won three consecutive road/street course events in the first half of the season, has finished in the top five in five of the seven road/street circuit events.

“Just good strategy, good racing,” he said. “I'm looking for driver details I've never looked for in my life, just minute bits of time to find on someone, because the field is so compressed.  To me, it's the most competitive field I've ever raced in.  I've never had to search so hard for speed in my life.”

Conway’s car developed a fuel pressure issue midway through the pre-qualifying practice session, which contributed to his lowest start of the season after being among the quickest three in practice a day earlier. The A.J. Foyt Racing crew changed the fuel pump after qualifications and Conway again was third quickest in the race day warm-up.

“The ABC Supply car was really good and we just have to continue this form at Mid-Ohio," said Conway, who will join 20 others in testing on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn course July 26.
