Hunter-Reay also claims 'Super Saturday' series
JUN 24, 2012
NEWTON, Iowa -- Three consecutive IZOD IndyCar Series races on Saturdays. All on ovals, though they are as diverse as the countryside their venues occupy.
Dub it (well, unofficially INDYCAR did) the "Super Saturday" series, which supports the season-long run to the A.J. Foyt Trophy that is presented to the driver with the most points in oval races. That racer will be recognized following the final oval race of the season. Through four rounds, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan are tied for the lead.
Hunter-Reay's consecutive victories at the Milwaukee Mile and Iowa Speedway gave the Andretti Autosport driver the most points in the three races (114). With 21st place at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9 (mechanical), it didn't appear Hunter-Reay would be in contention. He scored 52 points (two bonus points for leading the most laps at Milwaukee) and 50 points for the win in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 under the lights June 23.
Justin Wilson had the early lead with 50 points after his win at Texas. Graham Rahal was second (40) and Ryan Briscoe was third (35). James Hinchcliffe climbed to the top following his third-place showing at Milwaukee paired with his fourth at Texas for a total of 67 points. But Hinchcliffe earned only 13 points at Iowa with a 17th place after starting fourth because of contact with the Turn 4 SAFER Barrier.
